The Shaper
A little bit about me Jamie the shaper:
Open Ocean has been around since the 80's. When I bought the original shop the owners laughed at me and didn't think I'd last two weeks, but I quickly developed a loyal following. From the 80s to the mid 90s, Open Ocean boards where the most prominent boards in the South Bay.
I started shaping surfboards in 1972 in my garage. I was 17 and had been disappointed by a new board from a local shaper. I remember shaping my first board, and actually being stoked on how good it turned out.
In 1995, I was diagnosed with kidney cancer, I closed the shop and bought a ticket to Hawaii. I didn't know how long I was going to live so I wanted to surf my brains out. I ended up ghost-shaping for a big surfboard company over there; let's just say it was one of the bigger shops on the Island. After beating cancer, I returned to the South Bay in 2001 to work and save money to bring back the brand, which I did April 2010. Give me a call about your next custom board, I know the area, I know the breaks and I know what works. Jamie.
